Halloween Costume ideas that safe for your children

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers these costume safety tips:

-- Costumes, masks, beards and wigs should be flame resistant, meaning they will resist burning and extinguish quickly after being removed from the ignition source.

-- To lessen the risk of contact with candles or other ignition sources, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

-- For greater visibility at dusk or in darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape. Bags and sacks should be light-colored and decorated with reflective tape.

-- Costumes should be short enough to avoid causing children to trip and fall.

-- Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes.

-- Tie hats and scarves securely to prevent them from slipping over a child’s eyes.

-- Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have the child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision.

-- If a mask is used, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough for full vision.

-- Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be made of soft and flexible material.

-- Have children carry flashlights to see and be seen.
